The Basics of Sedation Dentistry | Creekside Endodontics
Dental care should be a routine part of general health care, and yet it is the source of anxiety for many patients! Needless to say, there’s a certain amount of fear of discomfort when it comes to dental surgery and endodontics.
Fortunately, advances in dental and medical technology have made endodontic procedures such as root canal treatments faster, easier and less painful than ever before! These advances include several sedation dentistry methods designed to eliminate pain and anxiety.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide—sometimes referred to as “laughing gas”—is a tried and true method of dental sedation that’s been used since the mid-1800s. It’s been proven to be a safe and effective method of minimizing pain during dental procedures!
This inorganic gas is colorless and typically odorless and is inhaled immediately prior to a procedure to achieve a state of relaxation. Because this gas is absorbed quickly into the bloodstream, it takes effect almost immediately and also rapidly leaves the body once the procedure is over.
IV Sedation
IV sedation is a form of anesthesia that’s implemented intravenously. It’s a form of sedation that does not put patients fully to sleep, making it an ideal choice for those who are anxious about dental discomfort but also anxious about the inherent risk involved with general anesthesia.
While patients remain conscious during IV sedation, it does put patients in a very relaxed state and can leave a groggy feeling. It’s recommended that candidates for IV sedation talk to their dentist and have a friend or family member bring them to the appointment to provide a ride home for recovery!
Oral Sedation
For patients who have anxiety about masks or needles, Creekside Endodontics offers oral sedation as an easy and pain-free alternative!
For this form of sedation, a pill is taken an hour before the procedure. This pill minimizes activity in the parts of the brain responsible for fear—and like IV sedation, results in a completely tranquil conscious state during the endodontic procedure.
